How it all began

Iczar and Percy Mensah, who worked in his mom’s nutrition shop, always enjoyed giving each other recommendations. Iczar would suggest a gym or a restaurant, and Percy would share his latest discoveries. So when Iczar asked Percy about a recommendation for a great haircut, Percy suggested Flow, a barbershop owned by Joselin’s brother, Darwin, in Greensboro.

During Iczar’s first visit, Darwin was too busy to cut his hair – putting a huge stumbling block ahead of fate. But two weeks later, Darwin made time for Iczar and cut his hair every two weeks for several months. Darwin also learned that Iczar was a server at Tex and Shirley’s and started asking him to bring him some food whenever he was scheduled for a haircut. Soon, food and haircuts became a regular thing.

One day, after cutting Iczar’s hair, Darwin took Iczar to see his Maserati and then posted the picture on Snapchat. That same picture caught the eye of one of Joselin’s best friends, Cristhal Bazan, who told Joselin that her brother posted a picture of a “really cute guy.” Joselin checked out the photo and immediately asked Darwin to introduce him. Darwin, who is highly protective of his sister, rarely introduced men to his sister – nobody was good enough for Joselin. Yet Iczar was different. In Iczar, Darwin found a man with a great work ethic who respected women and didn’t drink or party. These are qualities Darwin appreciated, and he told Joselin about Iczar. With these simple exchanges, the wheels of fate were in motion.

Joselin often took her brother lunch on her work breaks and soon after called Darwin to see if he was hungry. He replied that she didn’t have to bring lunch as “her boyfriend brought me some food.” Joselin surmised he was referring to Iczar. She told Darwin to ask Iczar where “her food was.” Iczar told Darwin to tell Joselin that he would get her food next time.

But “next time” turned out to be a long time because in September 2015, Joselin – who has a passion for travel -- took off to Canada for a much-anticipated vacation. In the meantime, Iczar had friended Joselin on his Instagram, and Joselin had, in turn, commented on one of his pictures. And on September 28, 2015, he officially “slid into her DM,” sending countless messages as they got to know each other. He promised to bring Joselin “the best tacos she had ever had in her life” upon her return.

By October 1, Joselin was back at the mall at her retail job, and Iczar made good on his promise, bringing tacos from El Mercadito to Joselin’s workplace. They were so intrigued with each other that they stood there for two hours chatting away. After Iczar left, Joselin ate the tacos – and even though they were cold, they were the “best tacos ever.”

For the next few weeks, Iczar would visit Joselin at work whenever he could, and they would stand there enjoying long conversations. Their first official date was memorable: Joselin and Iczar went to the haunted attraction “Woods of Terror” in Greensboro on October 23. It was the perfect date for Joselin, and Iczar had the chance to “save her” from monsters all night. By March 1, 2016, they had become boyfriend and girlfriend.

And the rest, they say, is history.

Since that time, they have spent countless hours together, enjoyed many, many wonderful meals, traveled throughout the United States – from Vegas to Niagara Falls to Washington, DC. -- and adopted a fur baby, Ace.
